Budget app alternatives: what each one is actually for

Search results for “Spendee alternative” or “YNAB alternative” assume you already hate your current app. Often you do not — you need a different shape of tool. Below is a straight split by what you are trying to do, and where Kaunti belongs in that map.

Pick by job, not by star rating

Prices, bank lists and feature flags change. Treat this as orientation, then check each product’s site before you pay.

  • YNAB — zero-based budgeting method; strong if you want rules, not just a ledger.
  • Monarch — account dashboard and investments; strongest when US/Canadian banks connect cleanly.
  • Spendee — visual wallets and categories; casual tracking, optional bank link in supported regions.
  • Toshl — tags, filters and multi-currency; good if you like to slice data your own way.
  • Kaunti — manual wallets in 60 fiat currencies plus crypto, one net worth total, no bank login; web plus Android; UI also in uk, ru, pl, cs.

If you want a budgeting method, not another spreadsheet

Choose YNAB when the problem is discipline: money gets assigned a job before it disappears. Kaunti records balances and spending; it does not teach a method. Switching from YNAB to Kaunti because you travel more is reasonable; switching because YNAB “failed” when you never finished the course usually is not.

If you want accounts to update while you sleep

Monarch (and bank-linked modes of Spendee or Toshl) shine when aggregation works for your banks. That is often true for US-centric setups and less true for a Polish account plus Wise plus a Ukrainian card. Kaunti deliberately skips aggregation: you enter data, or on Android you optionally parse notifications from apps you select.

If you already track wallets, but in one currency at a time

Spendee and Toshl are the closest peers. If they already show your EUR and PLN wallets the way you think, keep them. Kaunti is worth a look when you want each wallet to stay in its native currency, investments beside cash, and a total in the currency you pick — without granting a bank password to a third party.

What Kaunti will not do for you

No automatic investment sync, no envelope lesson plan, no promise that every bank on earth connects. Premium adds voice logging, receipt capture and the assistant; the free tier is enough to test whether manual multi-currency tracking sticks for a month.

FAQ

Is Kaunti a free alternative to Spendee or Toshl?

Kaunti has a free tier for manual tracking. Premium is optional. Competitor pricing changes; compare on their sites the day you decide.

Can I import categories from YNAB or Spendee?

There is no one-click import. Most people open a wallet per account, enter today’s balance and track forward. CSV export from Kaunti works if you outgrow the app.

Does Kaunti connect to banks like Monarch?

No. That is intentional. You type transactions, or on Android use optional notification parsing for banking apps you allow.

Which app is best for couples?

All five can share to some degree. Kaunti uses email invites to a shared wallet while keeping personal wallets separate.

Test with this week’s real accounts

Create one wallet per account, enter balances once, log spending for seven days. The free tier is enough to see if the total matches how you think.
